    There was a major fire at a factory south of Paris in the early hours of Friday morning (5 November), ad the French police are investigation the possibility that it was a case of arson.

    SYNOPSIS: The fire broke out at a large factory owned by the General Electric Company. The cause of the blaze, which first took hold in an area containing large stocks of plastics, is not yet known. But it is the third fire there in the past year.

    The factory is at Massy Palaiseau, about 9 miles (15 km.) south of Paris. The burning plastics created vast clouds of smoke and fumes, and eight firemen had to be treated for the effects of the poisonous fumes in hospital.

    The fire continued to burn for 24 hours before firemen managed to control it.

    The cost of the damage is estimated to b about forty million new francs (GBP5,000,000 sterling).
