  • Description

THE LATEST IN SHORT-HAUL JET AIRCRAFT WENT ON SHOW YESTERDAY AT THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS AIRCRAFT FACTORY IN AMSTERDAM YESTERDAY. IT IS THE FOKKER F.28 FELLOWSHIP - THE COMPANY'S FIRST JET AIRCRAFT.

FOKKER OF AMSTERDAM WILL START TEST FLIGHTS ON THE AIRCRAFT ON MAY 15; ON MAY 26 IT IS DUE TO FLY OVER THE LE BOURGET AIR SHOW IN FRANCE.

THE AIRCRAFT IS A TWIN-ENGINED TURBO-FAN SHORT-HAUL JET WHICH, THE MAKERS SAY, IS THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO BE ABLE TO UNDERTAKE SHORT JOURNEYS PREVIOUSLY ONLY ECONOMICALLY POSSIBLE BY PROPELLOR DRIVEN AIRCRAFT.

THE COMPANY CLAIM THEY HAVE A FOUR-YEAR LEAD OVER THE REST OF THE WORLD WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS AIRCRAFT. IT WILL CARRY 60 TO 65 PASSENGERS AND THE COMPANY EXPECTS TO PRODUCE TWO OF THE NEW AIRCRAFT A MONTH.

THE JET WILL BE POWERED BY ROLLS-ROYCE SPEY JUNIOR ENGINES AND WILL COST ABOUT GBP900,000 STERLING. BECAUSE OF ITS LOW TYRE PRESSURE IT WILL BE ABLE TO USE RUNWAYS OF ONLY 4,000 FEET (1,200 METRES).

THE F.289 WILL BE BUILT IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE GERMAN AND ONE BRITISH COMPANY, WITH THE NON-DUTCH COMPANIES BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR 45 PER CENT OF THE PRODUCTION COSTS.
