  • Description

President Nixon paid a personal visit on Tuesday to the New York "Daily News", the nation's largest newspaper and a staunch supporter of his policies.

The meeting, held at the President's request, was the latest in a series of off-the-record briefings the President has given to newspaper executives throughout the country.

In the 37th floor board-room of the "News", the President met the news executive board of the paper, headed by Chairman F.M. Flynn.

The President got an enthusiastic welcome from hundreds of people who waited behind wooden police barricades at the newspaper's building on East 42nd Street. Mr. Nixon was accompanied by a long-standing friend, Mr. Roger Johnson.

Mr. Nixon's presidency has been marked by deteriorating relations with the news media, highlighted by Vice-President Agnew's accusations of bias on their part in dealing with the administration's policies.

The President's visit to the "Daily News" building came on the same day as news that the US Department of Defence is studying a national warning system, patented last month, which would put 96 per cent of the population in touch with the President.

Mr. Carl Russell, an architect, and chief of operations on the project, said in Louisville, Kentucky that the control circuit of the system would interrupt broadcasts, and start up stations which were off the air.

The President would be able, if it is adopted, to dial a coded sequence of tones of pulses from a White House telephone to activate the system and transmit a message on radio, television, or telephone.
