    TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: BAYULKEN: "Out of this meeting, I can convince you that the member states not only expressed their sworn intention to maintain CENTO but also, taking into consideration all the elements and conditions that prevail today in the world to strengthen it as much as is possible. So I can tell you that all the ministers are unanimous in thinking that they would pursue the policy of peace, detente, security and cooperation with this concept in mind."

    Background: The Secretary-General of the Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO), Umit Haluk Bayulken of Turkey, told a news conference on Thursday (27 May) that member states believed peace, security, detente and relaxation of tensions to be concepts that "contained an element of indivisibility".

    He said that any success in relaxation of tensions in one region should not be at the expense of other regions.

    Mr. Bayulken was speaking at the end of a two-day meeting of CENTO foreign ministers from the United States, Britain, Turkey, Iran and Pakistan.

    The United States and its four CENTO allies called for renewed efforts to get a durable Middle East peace settlement.

    They warned the Soviet Union that security in the CENTO region constituted an important element in European security.

    The CENTO foreign ministers also voiced concern about any repetition within the alliance's region of the Soviet and Cuban type involvement in Angola.

    SYNOPSIS: The Council of Ministers of the Central Treaty Organisation ended its 23rd session in London on Thursday. The session was presided over by Umit Haluk Bayulken, Secretary-General of the Organisation.

    At the end of the session, the Secretary-General addressed a news conference.
