    Background: ALAYH, LEBANON AND JERUSALEM

Unidentified gunmen ambushed an Israeli army bus on the Beirut-Damascus highway on October 3 killing six soldiers and wounding 15 others. The ambush tool place at the former Palestinian-controlled mountain resort of Alayh, just north of Beirut. The attackers were reportedly armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. Army helicopters ferried the dead and wounded as Israeli soldiers began a search of the area, which is just south of the Syrian front-line. The Israeli cabinet met in Jerusalem on October 4 in special session to discuss the situation in the Lebanon in the light of the ambush. Army Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan and several other military commanders were called to the meeting in the prime minister's office. This was seen as a sign that the government was considering military action. Hours after the cabinet session, from which no statement was issued, Israeli warplanes raided Syrian positions in the Lebanese mountains east of Beirut. An Israeli army spokesman said a Syrian SAM missile launcher had been put out of action. Earlier, Israeli defence sources said the government in Jerusalem was holding Syria responsible for the attack on the Israeli bus.
