Background: Funeral services for some of the Palestinians killed in Israeli raids into Lebanon were held at Tripoli on Thursday (22 February). They died early the previous morning during attacks by Israel on two refugee camps in Northern Lebanon. Lebanese government reports said thirty people were killed in the Israeli attack.
For Thursday's funeral service, the bodies were brought a few miles (kilometres) from one of the refugee camps. About four thousand mourners attended the services at Tripoli's Great Mosque. The dead were later buried at the camps without ceremony and without outside witnesses.
Israel claimed the refugee camps were used for the training of Palestinian guerrillas. Several coffin bearers at the Tripoli funerals were armed with automatic firearms.
