Poland, fielding most of the team which won them a soccer gold medal at Munich Olympics last year, had a disastrous start to their World Cup Qualifying campaign when they were beaten 2-nil by Wales at Ninian Park Cardiff on Wednesday evening. (28th March)
Leighton James and Trevor Hockey scored for Wales, and the result leaves England as strong favourites to win through from Group five. England, who have yet to meet Poland, have already taken three points off Wales.

England and Wales now share the group leadership, but England have played one game fewer.

SYNOPSIS: Ninian Park, Cardiff, where Wales, playing from left to right, kick off the second half in their match with Poland. The match is a qualifier in Group five for the World Cup, and Wales are co-leaders of the Group with England. The first half of this game ended with neither side getting the ball into the net....but that was shortly to change.

One minute gone and Thomas takes the throw-in to Toshak.... he gets it to Evans and on to Leighton James - who finds the top of the net with a right-footed hook. The shot puts Wales ahead one-nil.

For Leighton James the score couldn't have come a moment too soon..... he'd missed two good scoring chances in the first half.

For Poland supporters in the stand there wasn't much to cheer about...their team was let down by the defence which frequently collapsed under pressure from the Welsh forwards. However, the Welsh goal provoked Poland into a more attacking style.

But the visitors couldn't get the ball past goalkeeper Sprake, and after a while Wales got back on the attack. They were facing almost the same Polish team which won the gold medal for soccer at the Munich Olympics....a team which just wasn't good enough on this occasion. One minute from the end Terry Yorath made the break for Trevor Hockey to add Wales second and final goal.

For Poland, the 2 nil defeat was a disastrous start to their qualifying chances in Group five. And England are now favourites to go through having already taken three points of Wales.
