  • Description

ANGRY FANS HURLED CUSHIONS AND INVADED THE FIELD WHEN MEXICO WERE BEATEN 3-2 BY ITALY IN THEIR SOCCER INTERNATIONAL IN MEXICO CITY ON WEDNESDAY. THE CUSHION-THROWING STARTED MIDWAY THROUGH THE SECOND HALF WHEN THE MEXICAN REFEREE DISALLOWED A GOAL BY THE HOME SIDE, WHICH WOULD HAVE LEVELLED THE SCORE 2-2.

MANY OF THE 80,000 FANS BOOED LOUDLY AND FOR TEN MINUTES BOMBARDED THE FIELD WITH HEAVY BLACK LEATHER CUSHIONS TORN FROM THE SEATS. AT ONE STAGE DURING THE DEMONSTRATIONS - THE MOST PROLONGED AND WILDEST SEEN IN MEXICO CITY FOR SOME TIME - PLAYERS WERE FORCED TO GATHER IN A TIGHT CIRCLE IN THE CENTRE OF THE FIELD TO ESCAPE THE BARRAGE.

THE MATCH WAS RESTARTED AFTER PASSIONS HAD COOLED. MEXICO WENT ON TO EQUALISE 2-2, ONLY TO BE BEATEN BY A GOAL FROM ITALIAN LEFT-WINGER LUIGI RIVA 60 SECONDS FROM THE FINAL WHISTLE.

MEXICO ENDED THE FIRST HALF WITH A 1-0 LEAD AFTER A LAST MINUTE OPPORTUNIST HEADER BY CENTRE-FORWARD ENRIQUE BORJE INTO THE BACK OF THE NET. THE ITALIANS EQUALISED IN THE 13TH MINUTE OF THE SECOND HALF THROUGH RIVA AND TWO MINUTES LATER WENT AHEAD 2-1 WITH A GOAL FROM CENTRE-FORWARD PIETRO AMASTASIA. MEXICO EQUALISED IN THE 25TH MINUTE THROUGHOUT RIGHT-WINGER JOSE LUIS GONZALEZ.

THE TWO TEAMS MEET HERE AGAIN NEXT SUNDAY (5 JANUARY).
