  • Description

Attempts to salvage the stricken Liberian tanker, "WAFRA", stuck fast on a sandbank some six miles off Cape Agulhas in South Africa, have been abandoned. Plans are being made to either sink the tanker with the help of the South African Air Force, or by towing the stricken vessel further out to sea and sinking it with specially-placed charges.

The "WAFRA" ran aground on Sunday (28 FEBRUARY 1971), and has since leaked an oil slick more than 30 miles long and 5 miles wide. The slick grew hourly as the oil spilt from the tanker's ruptured port side, and was moved by wind and tides towards some of South Africa's more popular beaches.
