  • Description

RIOT POLICE CLEARED DEFIANT STUDENTS OUT OF THE RESIDENCE HALLS OF NAIROBI UNIVERSITY COLLEGE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO ENFORCE ORDERS FROM PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA THAT THE COLLEGE BE CLOSED INDEFINITELY. DEMANDING GREATER ACADEMIC FREEDOM, THE STUDENTS WENT ON STRIKE LAST FRIDAY MR. OGINGA ODINGA, THE LEFT-WING OPPOSITION LEADER, HAD BEEN REFUSE PERMISSION FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS MONTH TO ADDRESS THEM.

THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED EARLIER YESTERDAY THAT THE COLLEGE WAS BEING CLOSED -- TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE END OF THE TERM -- BECAUSE A MAJORITY OF 1,825 STUDENTS HAD IGNORED A MINISTERIAL DIRECTIVE TO RETURN TO LECTURES YESTERDAY MORNING. THE EVICTION WAS CARRIED OUT BY MORE THAN 200 POLICE AND MEN OF THE PARA- MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE UNIT, EQUIPPED WITH SHIELDS, TEAR GAS AND, IN SOME CASES, AUTOMATIC WEAPONS.

STUDENTS WEARING BADGES SAY "NOT YET UHURU (FREEDOM)" JEERED AS A COLUMN OF RIOT POLICE ADVANCED DOWN THE MAIN ROAD PAST THE RESIDENCE HALLS, HURRYING THEM ON. THE AREA WAS CORDONED OFF AND BARRED TO ALL TRAFFIC EXCEPT THE HUNDREDS OF CARS AND TAXIS WHICH ARRIVED TO TAKE AWAY THE EVICTED STUDENTS.

HUNDREDS OF FOREIGN STUDENTS, MOSTLY FROM NEIGHBOURING UGANDA AND TANZANIA, WERE AMONG THE 1,200 RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS PUT OUT WITH THEIR BAGGAGE AND OTHER BELONGING. MANY COMPLAINED THEY HAD NOWHERE TO SLEEP. A ZAMBIAN, WHO DECLINED TO BE NAMED, TOLD REUTERS NEWS AGENCY: "THIS ABRUPT NOTICE IS VERY INHUMAN. SOME OF US DO NOT EVEN HAVE MONEY FOR TRANSPORT TO OUR COUNTRIES."
(APART FROM THOSE FROM AFRICAN COUNTRIES FOREIGN STUDENTS EVICTED FROM THE COLLEGE INCLUDED STUDENTS FROM AUSTRALIA, THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, WEST GERMANY, SWEDEN, NORWAY, AND BRITAIN.)
