  • Description

Thousands of Turkish students and trade unionists marched through the streets of Istanbul yesterday (Saturday) demanding the release of the Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash by the Cyprus government.

The demonstrators were led by a band playing Turkish songs. The marchers carried large Turkish flags.

Denktash was arrested on October 31 when he landed in Northern Cyprus in a small boat with two other men. He had been living in exile. Denktash was the former president of the Turkish-Cypriot Community.

The Cyprus government has alleged that Denktash was on a secret mission for the Turkish government, and he has been charged with offenses against the State of Cyprus.

The Turkish government has denied knowledge of Denktash's movement.

The demonstrators in Istanbul dispersed without incident.
