  • Description

A new Eastern bloc peace initiative, spear-headed by the Yugoslav leader, President Tito, began on Tuesday (5 February) with the President's arrival in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The purpose of his visit was apparently to attempt to secure a settlement between Syrian and Israel along the lines of the recent agreement on the Egyptian front.

President Tito and his wife spent two days in Syria. They were met at the Damascus airport by President al-Assad; the Syrian Prime Minister, Mahmoud al-Ayoubi, and leaders of the ruling Baathist party. The visit was President Tito's first to Syria since 1967.

The Rumanian leader, President Ceausescu, is also to visit Syria soon, to promote detailed negotiations between Israel and Syria. Rumania is the only eastern bloc country which maintains relations with both the Arab and Israel.
