  • Description

At the Zimbabwe Rhodesian peace talks in London, agreement was reached on Thursday (15 November) signalling the end of fourteen years of international isolation for the break-away British colony. After ten weeks of often bitter negotiation at Lancaster House, the Patriotic Front leaders have finally accepted Britain's proposals for new elections and legal independence within months. Lord Carrington, the conference chairman and British Foreign Secretary, warned of underestimating the difficulties which still lay ahead. Patriotic Front leader Joshua Nkomo indicated that a final ceasefire may only come after another round of hard bargaining, but Patriotic Front spokesman Eddison Zvobgo was delighted with the agreement.
