East Germany has beaten Russia 2-1 with a last minute goal in a friendly soccer international played on Thursday (28 July) ???.

SYNOPSIS: The East Germany were playing their first match after a lack-lustre tour of South America last month which ended with two draws and two defeats. From the start the East German side piled on the pressure against the Russians, a young team with little international experience. The Soviet trainer, Nikita Simonyan, is rebuilding his squad for the 1979 European championships and the 1980 Moscow Olympia. Unlike East Germany the Russians are already out of the qualifying rounds for the World Cup. On this occasion it was only eight minutes before East Germany scored.

Reinhard Haefner was the man who opened his team's account when the East Germans attacked the Russian goal and Haffner floated the ball into the corner of the net. It looked as though the Germans were well on top.

But only 14 minutes later the Russians were awarded a freedick 20 metres out from which Alexander Bobnov drove a shot against the underside of the crossbar and into the net. From then on it seemed likely that the score would remain level. It wasn't until the last seconds of the match that veteran forward Juen Sparwasser saved the day with a shot driven in wide of the Soviet goalkeeper.
