    FURTHER HEAVY RAIN HAS BROUGHT MORE FLOODING IN TUNISIA WHERE IT IS ESTIMATED 700 PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN THE COUNTRY'S WORST FLOODS FOR NEARLY AN CENTURY.ON MONDAY, A 24-HOUR DOWNPOUR SPREAD THE FLOODS TO CENTRAL EASTERN REGIONS AND THE TOWN OF SFAX, WITH A POPULATION OF 54-THOUSAND, WAS CUT OFF.

    TUNISIA'S LANDSCAPE WAS TRANSFORMED AFTER ALMOST TWO WEEKS OF CONTINUAL RAIN EARLIER THIS MONTH, STREAMS USUALLY LITTLE MORE THAN SIX FEET WIDE BECAME RANGING RIVERS. WHOLE VILLAGES WERE FLATTENED, PLANTATIONS BURIED. OVER 100,000 WERE HOMELESS.

    REPAIR WORK WAS ALREADY UNDERWAY WHEN NEW FLOODS HIT THE NORTHERN PART OF THE COUNTRY AROUND TUNIS. MANY TOWNSHIPS WERE CUT OFF. ONLY DAYS LATER, THE CENTRAL - EAST - WHICH SO FAR ESCAPED THE FLOODS -- WAS INUNDATED AFTER 24 HOURS OF TORRENTIAL RAIN. A FURTHER 50,000 OF THE POPULATION WERE MADE HOMELESS.

    THE GOVERNMENT SAYS 125 MILES (200 KMS) OF ROAD, 75 MILES (120 KMS) OF RAILWAY AND 30 BRIDGES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND ALL TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION DISRUPTED. LIVESTOCK LOSSES ARE ESTIMATED AS HIGH AS 20 PER CENT AND SHEEP WILL HAVE TO BE IMPORTED TO ENSURE FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE.

    RELIEF AID IS ALREADY FLOWING FROM NEIGHBOURING ARAB COUNTRIES AS WELL AS EAST AND WEST EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES. RED CROSS WORKERS ARE DISTRIBUTING FOOD AND BLANKETS TO THE THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES, MANY OF WHOM HAVE BEEN EVACUATED TO TENT TOWNS SET UP IN THE DESERT.

    THE FLOODS WILL COST TUNISIA TENS OF MILLIONS OF FRANCS, AND THE GOVERNMENT SAYS IT WILL SET THE ECONOMY BACK BY YEARS.
