  • Description

Thousands of Libyan women held a mass rally in Zawia, about 25 miles (40 kms) west of Tripoli, recently, to show support for the First of September Revolution which overthrew King Idris and brought Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to power in 1969.

The women carried placards and banners showing their resolve "to defend the revolution against all attacks by its enemies and their agents".

The rally was attended by Major Abdussalam Ahmed Jalloud, Prime Minister and member of the Revolutionary Command Council, who thanked the women for their backing.

It coincided with another mass rally in Tripoli at which Colonel Gaddafi spoke of the need for more severe revolutionary attitudes "against the enemies of our revolution both inside and outside the republic".

In the last eight months, the regime has bee shaken by an attempted coup and by student demonstrations which began early this year.
