Only the aircraft's navigator survived when a U.S. Air Force Starlifter jet transport crashed near Madrid late on Tuesday (August 28th). 17 passengers and seven air crew died when the aircraft hit the side of a hill only minutes before touch-down at the Torrejon air base near Madrid.
All of the passengers were United States' citizens, wives and children of servicemen. The flight was form Athens. At the time of the accident, both weather and visibility were good.
The survivor has been named as first Lieutenant William Ray, of New Jersey. He was rushed to hospital in Guadalajara. He had a broken leg and multiple contusions.
It was the ninth crash of U.S.A.F. aircraft in Spain in the last sight years, but until Tuesday, no civilians had been killed.
