  • Description

Scenes of jubilation in Tripoli followed the success of the referendum on a new constitution linking the Libyan people with Egypt and Syria.

This film shows the Egyptian Interior Minister Mamdouh Salem announcing the new Federation in Cairo, and the joyful reception it received in Libya.

In Tripoli the referendum coincided with the anniversary of the coup that brought Colonel Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, to power, so there was a double reason to celebrate.

In the new Federation, the preponderance in weight of population at least lies with Egypt, with its 34 million to tiny Libya's one and a half million, Syria's population is less than six million.

SYNOPSIS: In Cairo on Thursday, it was announced that Egypt's eight million voting population had given almost unanimous approval to the formation of a Federation with Libya and Syria. The referendum was also held in Libya and syria, where the same kind of overwhelming support was given to the new Federation. In Cairo the result was announced by Interior Minister Mamdouh Salem.

About 14 million voters in the three Arab countries, whose combined population is more than 42 million, took part in the vote on the Federation, which Arab leaders see as promoting both unity and greater strength against Israel.

In Tripoli, the referendum coincided with the anniversary of the coup that brought Colonel Gaddafi to power in 1969, so Libyans had a double reason to celebrate. There to see one of the most colourful and gay demonstrations in years were a number of important visitors from abroad, including President Nimeiry of the Sudan. Sudan is expected to join the Federation within a few months.

Libyan leader colonel Gaddafi has welcomed the new grouping a although his country's population is dwarfed in it by that of Egypt, a country that is also much bigger than Syria.

Colonel Gaddafi said in a live broadcast on Tripoli radio that the new Federation would make the whole world reconsider its attitude to the Arab nation.

There was no place in it, he said, for those who fought only with slogans.
