    ETHIOPIA CELEBRATED THE 37TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CORONATION OF HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, HAILE SELASSIE THE FIRST, ON FRIDAY (3 NOVEMBER). THE VISITING KENYAN LEADER, PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA, WAS AMONG THE MANY THOUSANDS OF PARTICIPATE IN THE CELEBRATIONS.

    A GUN SALUTE FIRED FROM THE GROUND OF THE GRAND PALACE AT DAWN SIGNALLED THE BEGINNING OF THE FESTIVITIES. SOLEMN RITES HAD BEEN PROCEEDING IN SAINT GEORGE'S CATHEDRAL SINCE MIDNIGHT, AND IT WAS TO THE CATHEDRAL THAT THE EMPEROR MADE HIS FIRST JOURNEY OF THE DAY. HIS MAJESTY DESCRIBED THE NATION AS ONE STANDING ON THE VERGE OF AN UNPRECEDENTED SURGE OF ACTIVITY AND EXPANSION IN ALL AREAS OF HER NATIONAL LIFE. HE DESCRIBED THE GREAT ADVANCES IN PUBLIC SERVICES - IN THE BUILDING OF ROADS, THE OPENING OF SCHOOLS AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS, AND THE GRADUAL INTRODUCTION OF LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT.

    SPEAKING ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS, THE EMPEROR DISCUSSED NIGERIA, THE MIDDLE EAST VIETNAM, AND THE PROBLEM OF RHODESIA. HE EXPRESSED BITTER DISAPPOINTMENT THAT THE MINORITY REGIME IN RHODESIA HAD NOT BEEN CRUSHED.

    LATER, IN A GRAND PALLCE CEREMONY, THE TWO LEADERS EXCHANGED COMPLIMENTS, PRESIDENT KENYATTA ENCOURAGING THE ASSEMBLY TO JOIN HIM IN A DECLARATION OF BROTHERHOOD. AT THE END OF HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT KENYATTA DECORATED EMPEROR SELASSIE WITH KENYA'S HIGHEST AWARD, THE GOLDEN HEART OF KENYA. THE MEETING ENDED WITH A MASS CHORUS OF 'HARAMBE' - A CRY OF TOGETHERNESS, LOVE AND UNITY.
