  • Description

A PLATOON OF UNITED STATES MARINES, DETAILED TO COLLECT THE BODIES OF FALLEN COMRADES AFTER RECENT HEAVY FIGHTING AT CON THIEN, NEAR THE DEMILITARISED ZONE BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM, WERE THEMSELVES HEAVILY HIT BY NORTH VIETNAMESE MORTAR AND ARTILLERY FIRE ON TUESDAY (4 JULY).

THE FIGHTING BROKE OUT AT CON THIEN ON SUNDAY (2 JULY) WHEN U.S. MARINES WERE BADLY MAULED AFTER THEY HAD MISJUDGED THE STRENGTH OF ENEMY FORCES.

A U.S. MILITARY SPOKESMAN IN SAIGON SAID THAT AMERICAN CASUALTIES WERE 58 DEAD, 107 WOUNDED AND 24 MISSING. THE NUMBER OF NORTH VIETNAMESE DEAD WAS PUT AT 83.

THE SPOKESMAN ADDED THAT THE MARINES ENGAGED A FORCE OF 105 NORTH VIETNAMESE, THEN FOUND THEY WERE ONLY PART OF A FORCE OF REGIMENTAL SIZE. SEVERAL ADDITIONAL COMPANIES WERE QUICKLY CALLED IN TO REINFORCE THE MARINES. ONE OF THEM WAS SO BADLY HIT THAT IT HAD TO LEAVE THE BATTLEFIELD.

CON THIEN IS ONE OF A CHAIN OF U.S. MARINE OUTPOSTS JUST SOUTH OF THE DEMILITARISED ZONE. THE OUTPOSTS ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT INFILTRATION INTO SOUTH VIETNAM FROM THE NORTH. THE NORTH VIETNAMESE HAVE KEPT HEAVY PRESSURE ON THE OUTPOSTS SINCE THEY WERE ESTABLISHED.
