    THE 5.5. METRE CLASS OF THE WORLD YACHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD ON MONDAY IN THE BAY OF NAPLES, ITALY, WAS WON BY AN AUSTRALIAN CREW, NORMAN BOOTH, CARL RYVES AND PETER O'DOMVELL, IN THEIR YACHT "SOUTHERN CROSS II". THEY BEAT OTHER YACHTS REPRESENTING 10 COUNTRIES.

    THE RACE TOOK PLACE IN HEAVY SEAS, WITH YACHTS FROM THE UNITED STATES, THE SOVIET UNION, BRITAIN, FRANCE, NORWAY, DENMARK, WEST GERMANY, SWITZERLAND, ITALY AND THE BAHAMAS, AS WELL AS AUSTRALIA, TAKING PART. BEFORE THE RACE, THEY YACHTS WERE MOORED AT THE NAPLES CANOTTIERI CLUB -- THE NAPLES YACHT CLUB.

    THE RACE WAS HELD UNDER OLYMPIC REGULATIONS AND POINTS SCORING SYSTEM. THE COURSE WAS A RECTANGLE OF TWO NAUTICAL MILES PARALLEL AND THREE MILES MERIDIAN, WITH THE AREA'S CENTRE ABOUT THREE-POINT-FIVE NAUTICAL MILES. FOR THE RACE TO BE DECLARED VALID, ALL YACHTS HAD TO CROSS THE FINISHING LINE BEFORE SUNSET AND MAINTAIN A MINIMUM SPEED OF TWO KNOTS.
