  • Description

A CEREMONY AT SHANNON AIRPORT IN IRELAND TODAY (SATURDAY) MARKED THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST COMMERCIAL AIRLINE SERVICE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC. IT WAS FLOWN BY IMPERIAL AIRWAYS, THE PREDECESSOR OF B.O.A.C., WHEN THE "C" CLASS FLYING BOAT CARIBOU INAUGURATED THE NORTH ATLANTIC AIRMAIL BETWEEN BRITAIN, CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES, ON AUGUST 5, 1939.

AMONG THE GUESTS FOR TODAY'S CEREMONY WERE MEMBERS OF THE CREW OF THE CARIBOU; SIR GILES GUTHRIE, CHAIRMAN OF B.O.A.C.; AND THE CREWS OF THE TWO FLYING BOATS WHICH MADE THE FIRST EXPERIMENTAL FLIGHTS IN 1937.

THE IRISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEMASS, UNVEILED A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE TO MARK THE OCCASION.

THE FIRST BRITISH FLIGHT WAS COMMANDED BY CAPTAIN J. C. KELLY ROGERS, NOW DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER OF AER LINGUS, IRELAND'S INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE. OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CREW WHO JOINED CAPTAIN ROGERS FOR TODAY'S CELEBRATION WERE CAPTAIN (NOW REVEREND) S. E. LONG; CAPTAIN (THEN FIRST OFFICER) B. C. FROST; AND RADIO OFFICER A. J. COSTER. THE OTHER CREW MEMBER, MR. C. E. WILCOCKSON DIED IN 1951.

THE FLIGHT PATH FOR THE CARIBOU WAS TRACED BY ANOTHER "C" FLYING BOAT PILOTED BY CAPTAIN A. S. WILCOCKSON, FLYING EAST TO WEST, AND BY PAN AMERICAN'S FAMOUS CLIPPER THREE, PILOTED BY CAPTAIN HAROLD GREY, NOW PAN AMERICAN'S CHAIRMAN, WHICH FLEW WEST TO EAST.

IT PROVED TO BE A SENTIMENTAL REUNION FOR THESE AVIATION PIONEERS WHO WERE GIVEN A CHANCE TO LOOK OVER B.O.A.C'S NEW TRANS-ATLANTIC JETLINER, THE C.C.10 -- NOW BEING PHASED INTO SERVICE.

THE VC.10 AND THE MORE FAMILIAR BOEING 707 PROVED A FAR CRY FROM THE OLD FLYING BOATS, WHICH TOOK ANYTHING UP TO 30 HOURS FOR THE OCEANIC FLIGHT. TODAY, MODERN JETS CROSS THE ATLANTIC IN 7 1/2 HOURS, AND GIVE A STRIKING ILLUSTRATION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CIVIL AIR TRANSPORT DURING THE PAST QUARTER CENTURY.
