  • Description

First the simple smoke stack rigged at the side of the Sistine Chapel gave out a wisp, then a puff of white smoke.

Eleven times in three days the stack had smoked. The third and fourth time it had poured forth white smoke - in error.

But this time, at the casting of the twelfth ballot byu the 51 enclosed Cardinals on the afternoon October 28, the puff became a belch, continuously, almost joyously. It was totally and unceaselessly WHITE.

To the waiting world the three days seemed long. But to the Roman Catholic Church with its tradition of the Cardinal's Conclave dating back to the 13th century time was not to be measured in terms of a day, even a week.
