    ALSO IN THE PARADE WAS A DETACHMENT OF CAVALRY AND A NUMBER OF AMERICAN 'HONEST JOHN' AND 'HAWK' MISSILES. FRENCH FIGHTER AIRCRAFT, RELEASING TRICOLOUR VAPOUR TRAILS, FLEW OVER THE PARADE, HELD TO MARK THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.

    AT 8AM. A 21-GUN SALUTE MARKED THE START OF THE GREAT DAY, BUT FOR MANY FRENCHMEN, CELEBRATIONS HAD ALREADY BEGUN. MANY FIRMS HAVE BRIDGED THE GAP BETWEEN THE WEEKEND AND BASTILLE DAY BY GIVING THEIR EMPLOYEES THE DAY OFF ON MONDAY, TO MAKE A FOUR-DAY WEEKEND. THOUSANDS HAVE LEFT THE CITY FOR THE SEA AND THE COUNTRYSIDE.

    OTHER EVENTS BEING HELD TO MARK THE GREAT NATIONAL HOLIDAY: THE END OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE, THE END OF THE JUNIOR TOUR DE L'AVENIR, STREET DANCING AND MASSIVE FIREWORK DISPLAYS TONIGHT. THE EIFFEL TOWER WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO GIVE SPECTATORS AND TOURISTS A SUPERB GRANDSTAND FOR THE FIREWORKS.
