Hansard's golden jubilee - Feb 16 1959. To celebrate this half century of the almost verbatim report of British Parliamentary proceedings, Visnews interviewed the editor, Mr. Bear, and Mr. Charles Leslie Hale MP.
Visnew's cameras also visited the HM Stationery Office where Hansard is printed.
Hansard is a copy of the official Journal of Parliament, compiled by three learned Clerks at the Table. A copy of the Journal is sent to the Queen every evening and to the printers who produce Hansard overnight.
An M.P. is permitted to check his reported speech and make slight corrections.
Non-party reporting began with Cobbett in 1803. He soon handed over the job to his printer, Hansard, whose family printed the official Journal.
