Background: Visnews filmed, July 1, the 5th stage of the Tour of Austria cycle race. Setting out for Spital from Saalfelden, the 33 riders - from Holland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Poland and Austria - had to contend with the Grossglockner mountain teat, taking them rain, the riders had to dismount at the top of the Grossglockner, descend by bus and line up for a second start for the last lap of the 132-kilometre course to Spital.

The winner of the mountain and the title of "Grossglockner King of 1959" was won by Kaupe of Austria, and second was his fellow-countryman Mascha. Kaupe went on to win the 5th stage, Mascha again coming second.

Mascha was also in the lead for the whole Tour up to this point, followed by Gossens, Belgium.
