Background: Prince Charles on Wednesday (September 15) followed British Royal tradition and joined the Navy. He's expected to remain in the service for the next three to five years.
The 22-year-old heir to the British Throne was wearing a naval wing on his sub-lieutenant's uniform when he drove into the college in his open-topped sports car. He recently completed an intensive six-month course in the Royal Air Force. The college's commanding officer, New Zealander, Captain Allan Tait, was among top-ranking officers who greeted Prince Charles. The Prince will be among 300 entrants taking part in a rigorous six-week graduate officers course, starting next Monday (September 20). The Prince is due to join the guided missile destroyer, HMS Norfolk on October 28.
