  • Description

THE INTERNATIONAL MOTOR CYCLE RACE MEETING AT OULTON PARK IN CHESHIRE TODAY (MONDAY) PROVED A TRIUMPH FOR TWO TOP RIDERS -- ONE GERMAN AND THE OTHER ENGLISH. BOTH MEN, HELMUT FATH AND RODNEY GOULD, WON TWO RACES EACH.

FATH, THE WORLD SIDECAR CHAMPION, RIDING A URS, WON BOTH SIDECAR RACES WHICH GAVE HIM AN AGGREGATE WIN. BUT THE CROWNING EVENT CAME AFTER HIS SECOND WIN WHEN THE 40-YEAR-OLD GERMAN RIDER WAS NAMED "PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR" IN THE MOTORCYCLE WORLD.

FATH SAID LATER HE WAS "VERY HAPPY" TO HAVE WON THE CUP. HE WAS, HE SAID, GETTING TO BE AN OLD MAN.

CHAMPION OF THE DAY WAS ENGLISHMAN, RODNEY GOULD, WHO WON THE 350CC RACE BY MORE THAN HALF A MINUTE AND THEN THE LIGHTWEIGHT RACE AFTER RACING TO THE LEAD FROM NINTH POSITION.

IN THE 350CC (JUNIOR) RACE GOULD, RIDING A YAMAHA, WENT NEAR TO EQUALLING THE OULTON PARK CIRCUIT LAF RECORD. HIS TIME FOR THE 15 LAPS -- 41 MILES (65 KMS) -- WAS 28 MINS 28.9 SECS.

GOULD'S FASTEST LAP WAS 1 MIN 51 SECS, JUST 0.4 SECS OUTSIDE THE LAP RECORD.

SECOND WAS PAT MAHONEY RIDING AN AIRMA??? BUT IT WAS GOULD WHO RECEIVED THE WINNER'S LAURELS FROM MISS GREAT BRITAIN, YVONNE ORMES.
