  • Description

As the grim task of trying to identify the remains of those killed in the Pan American airliner crash in Northern Bali continued, on Thursday (April 25) a party of relatives of Japanese people killed in the crash travelled to a camp set up by the Indonesian Army 5 miles (8kms) from the crash site.

The relatives arrived from Tokyo on Thursday morning to perform a religous ceremony for the dead, and to examine the remains of the victims.

They also looked at the site of the crash - just 150 ft (40 metres) below the summit of a 3,000 ft (900 metres) mountain about 38 miles (60kms) north of Bali's DenPasar airport.

The crash came as the Boeing 707 aircraft was approaching DenPasar Airport from Hong Kong. All 107 passengers and crew were killed.

On Monday (April 29) the search for bodies by Indonesian authorities was called off. They said the remains of about 70 people had been recovered with great difficulty from the mountainside. Other remains were scattered widely over the crash area and would be almost impossible to find, said Panam officials.

Japanese victims who have been identified will be cremated on Bali and their ashes flown home. Most of the other remains will be burned in a mass grave on Bali. Of the 96 passengers, 29 were Japanese, 18 French, 17 American and 16 Australian.

On Monday an Indonesian search party found the "black box" flight recorder which investigators hope will shed light on the cause of the crash.
