  • Description

The eighth Thai-Japan annual trade talk started in Bangkok on Monday with top private businessmen from both countries sitting down to negotiate this year's export targets to Japan.

Mr. Ob Vasuratna, President of the Trade Board of Thailand, has asked Japan to diversify its purchase of Thai Agricultural materials, which make up nearly 90 per cent of her import, and buy more manufactured goods from this country.

The three-day meeting is being attended by a 30-man Japanese delegation led by Mr. Renzo Taguchi, President of the Economic Federation of Japan.

The negotiation would set specific targets of 56 export items, mainly agricultural produces such as maize, sorghum, caster seed, kapok and beans.

Thailand last year suffered a trade deficit of 350 million US Dollars with Japan, a drop of 14.5 percent compared to 1975. Its export amounted to 780 million US Dollars while import from Japan was 1,130 million US Dollars in 1976.

Official-level trade talks will likely be held when Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda visit Thailand in next month.
