"Every day South Vietnamese troops push up Highway 13 in the hope of breaking the siege at An Loc, 60 miles north of Saigon. Each attempt to reinforce An Loc by road has been turned back. This convoy was ambushed about 13 miles shots of its goal, just past the town of Chon Than. The South Vietnamese have not given up. They have switched to more cautious tactics. Day by day they inch forward; they're setting up artillery bases every few miles. Howitzers and other big guns lay down a blanket of protective fire. After the barrage, infantrymen move forward. The new approach has enabled the South Vietnamese to clear a small stretch of highway. It's still tough going for the foot-soldiers. The North Vietnamese continue to inflict heavy losses on Saigon's forces. Each day, the list of dead and wounded grows larger, but South Vietnamese commanders would rather take the casualties than lose An Loc. Dennis Troute, NBC News."

Background: South Vietnamese troops on Sunday (May 14) were still battling against fie??? communist opposition to break through to relieve An Loc, fifty-six miles (90 kms) north of Saigon. About ten-thousand communist troops have been besieging, and holding parts of the provincial capital, An Loc, since April 6, and despite continued efforts to reach the beleaguered city South Vietnamese relief forces have been kept at bay.

But the South Vietnamese have not stopped trying, although they have adopted more cautious tactics. Howitzers and other big guns lay down a blanket of protective fire and infantrymen move forward after it.

The new approach has enabled the Government troops to clear a small stretch of highway.
