VISNEWS May 31 filmed Muslims and Europeans voting in Algiers for 32 seats in the French Senate. Of the 6,000 electors two thirds were Muslims.
These were the first Senatorial elections in Algeria under the system of the single electoral college, which provides for Muslims and Europeans voting together.
The 12 Europeans and 20 Muslims elected in Algeria all favoured the Algerian policy of President de Gaulle. Although many seem to give it a different interpretation.
Several former Senators of the Fourth Republic were re-elected, indicating that the tide of the May 13 revolution, which swept De Gaulle to power last year, has receded.
