For the first time in 175 years of all-white scholars at Georgia University, in the 'deep south of the U.S., Jan 11, a two negroes gained admission by court ruling. But their first night there ended in a battle between incensed white students and police.
One of the negroes was 18-year-old Charlayne Hunter. She was besieged in her dormitory by students yelling 'Go Home, Nigger.' They overwhelmed local police, then fought with State police reinforcements in the grounds of the University until tear-gas defeated them.
Next day, Jan 12, the two negroes were told they had been suspended for their own protection and that of other students. Patrol cars picked them up and took them to their homes - in Atlanta.
