IN TOKYO, THE MAY DAY RALLY WAS ATTENDED BY NEARLY 600,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING WOMEN AND CHILDREN WITH BANNERS IN PROTEST AGAINST NUCLEAR ARMS TESTS. OTHERS CALLED FOR HIGHER WAGES, SHORTER WORKING HOURS AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS.

AMONG SPEAKERS WAS MR. JOICHIRO KAWAKAMI, GENERAL SECRETARY OF JAPAN'S SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY. A BIG PROCESSION CAME AT THE END OF THE SPEECHES, LED BY MR. KAWAKAMI.

MARCHERS OBEYED AN APPEAL BY THE MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE NO TO DEMONSTRATE AT THE U.S. EMBASSY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS. ONE SIGNIFICANT ASPECT OF THIS YEAR'S MAY DAY COMMEMORATION WAS THE ABSENCE OF ANY INCIDENTS.
