  • Description

President Jomo Kenyatta performed the laying of the foundation stone ceremony for the new Mang'u High School in Thika last Sunday (19 June). The school, one of the oldest and most respected in Kenya, will leave its present buildings for a 214-acre site with modern buildings providing more facilities. The school will cost GBP600,000 - not all of it has been raised yet, but a single donation of GBP100,000 from West Germany has put the fund-raising committee well on the way.

SYNOPSIS: Mang'u High School - one of the oldest and most respected schools in Kenya. The school is moving to Thika, 25 miles north of Nairobi... and President Kenyatta performed the laying of the foundation stone last Sunday.

Work is just beginning on the school, which will have a site of 214 acres - and will offer its pupils more modern buildings and better facilities. The school moved to its old Site in 1939.

Children from the whole area came to see the President, and they were in a happy mood. They're the ones who will benefit first from the school. It's being built in three stages, and the first one will be for Forms 1 to 4. It should be finished before the end of the year.

President Kenyatta had a lot to say to the Archbishop of Nairobi, who also attended the ceremony. Mang'u High School has produced a high number of well-known people, including an Archbishop, Bishops, Ministers and many others. With the new facilities, both academic and sporting, the school hopes to go on producing successful people.

It will cost GBP600,000 to build the school, and it hasn't all been raised yet. But is single donation of GBP100,000 from West Germany has put the fund-raising committee on the right path.

The last two sections of the school are expected to be finished at the end of 1972 and 1973 respectively.
