  • Description

There's been another big anti-nuclear demonstration in France -- this time to protest against plans to flood a beautiful valley to provide cooling water for a power station.

SYNOPSIS: More than five thousand people led by farmers in their tractors took part in the demonstration at the village of Naussac southwest of Paris. It followed the recent protest against plans for a nuclear plant at Creys-Malville when one demonstrator died and twelve others were taken to court after battles with riot police. By contrast Sunday's (7 August) march went off peacefully, although the issue has aroused feelings all over France.

Work has already started on a dam to create a reservoir of 190 million cubic metres. It would flood an area of 1,280 hectares (3,162 acres) of the Lozere valley including the village of Naussac and the homes of 180 people. Those principally opposed to the project have been local farmer and traders, ecologists and the French Socialist Party. They've formed a defence committee to fight the dam.

The national newspaper, Le Matin, has also claimed that Naussac is merely the latest case in which the central pow have condemned whole regions without debate or consultation The construction of the Nauss dam, it said, is 'another example of the incompatibility between a state open only to economic arguments and the interests of the people". The local authorities have also condemned the project and accused the government of bei??? less than honest in its dealings with them.
