Background: Two Belgian politicians, both members of the Flemish nationalist party, joined 18 hunger strikers in the Church of St. Merri in Paris on Tuesday (December 23). Their symbolic hunger strike began on Sunday (December 21). It was called in support of six Corsican separatists who have been on hunger strike for more than six weeks in Paris Jails. The six were among 17 charged after the occupation of a hotel in Ajaccio and a town hall in Bastelica last January.

SYNOPSIS: The symbolic hunger strike took place in a room near the church's nave.

The strikers are protesting about the different treatment given to Corsican separatists and anti-separatists awaiting trial. They claim anti-separatists have been given their liberty while separatists have been jailed. The two politicians who joined the hunger strike are Willy Kaipers and Andre de Sambians. Both are in the Belgian nationalist party Volksunie. They said their action was in support of separatist groups throughout Europe. And they called for a popular alliance of all European breakaway groups.

The Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC) has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in France this year. This includes the bombing of the central Paris law courts and explosions in three buildings in Marseilles on Sunday (December 21). Three passers-by were slightly injured in the blasts. The FLNC has also claimed responsibility for a machine-gun attack earlier this year on police guarding the Iranian Embassy in Paris. They are demanding independence for the French Mediterranean Island. French police are reported to be on the alert for any further incidents over the Christmas period.
