HE THUS MAINTAINED HIS RECORD OF NEVER BEING BEATEN IN A CROSS COUNTRY EVENT IN HIS OWN COUNTRY. A CROWD OF ABOUT 10-THOUSAND SAW GAMMOUDI COVER THE 12 KILOMETRES (7 1/2 MILES) COURSE IN 35 MINUTES 25.4 SECONDS. TWO ENGLISHMEN. RON HILL AND ROY FOWLER, WERE SECOND AND THIRD RESPECTIVELY.

    A TOTAL OF 107 RUNNERS 13 COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE RACE ON THE KASSAR SAID COURSE IN THE WESTERN SUBURBS OF TUNIS.

    SURPRISE OF THE EVENT WAS GASTON ROELANTS, LAST YEAR'S WINNER OF THE EVENT. THE BELGIAN OLYMPIC STEEPLECHASE CHAMPION STARTED FAVOURITE YESTERDAY BUT BROKE DOWN AFTER EIGHT KILOMETRES (4 3/4 MILES) AND FINISHED IN TEARS WELL BEHIND THE LEADERS. GAMMOUDI SPRINTED INTO THE LEAD AFTER NINE KILOMETRES (5 1/2 MILES) AND DESPITE EFFORTS BY HILL AND FOWLER TO OVERHAUL HIM, NEVER LOOKED LIKE BEING CAUGHT. HILL CLOCKED 35:26.8 AND FOWLER FINISHED IN 35:31.8. GUY TEXERREAU (FRANCE) WAS FOURTH FOLLOWED BY MIKE FREARY (ENGLAND), MARIANO HARO (SPAIN) AND ALLAN RUSHMER (ENGLAND). ENGLAND RETAINED THEIR TITLE. FRANCE WAS SECOND IN THE TEAM EVENT AND SPAIN THIRD.
