GOV. ERNEST F. HOLLINGS SAID IN A PARTING ADDRESS TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE ON?

  • Description

GOV. ERNEST F. HOLLINGS SAID IN A PARTING ADDRESS TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE ON WEDNESDAY THAT DESEGREGATION IS A HURDLE THE STATE MUST CLEAR OR SUFFER "IRREPARABLE HARM".

SOUTH CAROLINA AND ALABAMA ARE THE ONLY TWO REMAINING SOUTHERN STATES IN WHICH NO SCHOOL INTEGRATION EXISTS.

THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE IN THE RACIAL CLIMATE OF THE TWO STATES, HOWEVER, AND THIS WAS MARKEDLY POINTED UP BY HOLLINGS' TALK TODAY AND THE FAREWELL ADDRESS THAT OUT-GOING ALABAMA GOVE. JOHN PATTERSON DELIVERED TO HIS LEGISLATURE YESTERDAY.

PATTERSON URGED THE LAWMAKERS TO MAINTAIN SEGREGATION AT ALL COSTS AND "NEVER SURRENDER".

HOLLINGS TOLD HIS LEGISLATURE: "WE HAVE ALL ARGUED THAT THE SUPREME COURT DECISION OF MAY 1954 IS NOT THE LAW OF THE LAND, BUT EVERYONE MUST AGREE IT IS THE FACT OF THE LAND."
"AS DETERMINED AS WE ARE, WE OF TODAY MUST REALIZE THE LESSON OF 100 YEARS AGO AND MOVE ON FOR THE GOOD OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND OUR UNITED STATES."
