Background: The survivors of the earthquake which struck Northern Peru and Southern on December 9 are recovering well from the disaster, according to Government Sources.
Villagers are helping with the re-building of shattered homes, with the help of relief workers who have brought food tents and medical help to the area, and restored electricity and drinking water. This film was shot of the village of Querecotillo, in the heart of fertile valley on the road to the Ecuador border.
The damage in the affected region, 600 miles (950 KMS) north-west of Lima, was mainly in the poor areas where houses are light and insubstantial. Main towns were hardly affected, and the Government's estimate of 28 dead and 294 injured were from outlying districts in the Piura area of Peru. On the Ecuador side of the border, the death toll is said to be about fourteen.
Tents were the main early requirement for the homeless people, and water was in short supply both for drinking and for crops.
Peruvian authorities were however better prepared for a relief operation after their experience of the May 31 earthquake which devastated North-central Peru, killing an estimated 70,000 people.
The Peruvian army has helped with the re-building of houses, the Red Cross has sent medical help, and the United States has aided the local Governments to fly in supplies to the area.
