  • Description

Britain's Queen Elizabeth, on her first state visit to Japan, had an opportunity to see something of Japanese traditions on Thursday (8 May)--though she had to visit a television studio to do so.

There, accompanied by Prince Philip, she watched the filming of a historical costume drama. Later, she went to a sports stadium to see a display of traditional martial arts by children.

At NHK, the Japanese broadcasting Corporation, the President, Mr. Kichiro Ono, conducted the royal visitors through the studios.

In one of them, actors dressed in traditional costumes and kimonos rehearsed a dramatisation of a historical incident dating from 250 years ago.

The at the nearby Yoyogi Sports Stadium, the Queen and Prince Philip watched children, including some foreign visitors, displaying judo techniques and Naginata--the art of sword-play for women.
