Background: Supporters of Frelimo, the black activist group which has fought for the independence of Mozambique, held a rally at Dondo near Beira on Saturday (7 September) as news reached the small town that right wing whites had taken over strategic points in the capital Lourenco Marques. Several thousand members of Frelimo heard speeches by their leaders setting out the details of independence arrangements reached with Portugal. News of the Lisbon Government's action sparked a takeover by the whites.

The agreement signed by Portugal and provided for a Frelimo led Government to take the east African territory up to independence next June ending 400 years of Portuguese rule and a bloody ten year guerrilla war. Frelimo, leaders claim to control the territory, but the whites deny this.

Despite the white's action in Lourence Marques, the areas outside the capital were reported quiet. News of the takeover reached the Frelimo leaders during their Dondo rally. Portuguese troops were also there but there was no trouble.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of Frelimo members gathered in the main square of Dondo, Mozambique on Saturday ??? hear the results of talks between the Portuguese Government and their leaders. They were told that it had been agreed a Frelimo Government would be setup to bring the country to independence in June next year. Independence will bring to an end 400 years of Portuguese control of the east African nation..... it will also end 10 years of bloody guerrilla fighting.

But while the rally was being held news reached the town that right wing whites in the capital, Lourence Marques, had taken ever strategic positions in opposition to the independence agreement. There was no trouble at the Dondo rally....but fears are high that the white backlash will bring the blacks and whites into conflict.
