Background: A DRAMATIC FINISH TO THE INTERNATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RACE RUN AT OSTEND TODAY (SATURDAY) MEANT A DELAY OF TEN MINUTES WHILE OFFICIALS ARGUED WHO HAD WON THE RACE - FAYOLLE OR BATTY.THE TWO RUNNERS CROSSED THE FINISHING LINE ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, AND WITHOUT PHOTO-FINISH EQUIPMENT, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO NAME THE WINNER.EVENTUALLY, THE DECISION WENT TO THE FRENCHMAN, JEAN FAYOLLE, BUT THE TWO MEN WERE GIVEN THE SAME TIME OF 36 MINUTES 48 SECONDS FOR THE 7 1/2-MILES (12 KILOMETRES) COURSE.

EXPERIENCED OFFICIALS SAID THAT NOTHING COMPARABLE HAD EVER OCCURRED BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF THE RACE, FIRST HELD IN 1903.THE DRAMA DID NOT END WITH THE INDIVIDUAL FINISH.FOR THE FIRST TIME TWO TEAMS, ENGLAND AND FRANCE FINISHED LEVEL ON POINTS AT THE TOP OF THE TEAM LIST, BOTH WITH 55 POINTS.ENGLAND, HOWEVER, TOOK THE TEAM PRIZE ON THE BASIS OF A HIGHER PLACING FOR THEIR SIXTH SCORER.

COMPETITORS FROM 15 NATIONS STRUGGLED THROUGH BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS.POURING RAIN REDUCED THE PROSPECTS OF SUCH HARD-GROUND TEAMS LIKE THE SPANISH AND NORTH AFRICAN TEAMS.A THOUSAND METRES FROM THE TAPE FAYOLLE AND BATTY RAN ALMOST SHOULDER TO SHOULDER.

ENGLAND'S TEAM MANAGER ASKED TONIGHT FOR PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS OR FILM OF THE FINAL FEW YARDS TO DETERMINE WHETHER A CORRECT DECISION HAD, IN FACT, BEEN MADE.THE MANAGER, MR.TOLLEY MADE HIS REQUEST TO M.HERMES, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY UNION.
