    THE FIRST BATCH OF AGRICULTURAL WORKERS FROM WEST MALAYSIA ARRIVED IN SABAH BY SHIP ON WEDNESDAY (JAN. 25). THEY HAVE BEEN SENT TO ALLEVIATE THE LABOUR SHORTAGE IN THAT STATE.

    THIS BATCH OF 81 WORKERS, INCLUDING 11 WOMEN ARE ACCOMPANIED BY 32 OF THEIR DEPENDENTS.

    THEY ARE BEING SPONSORED BY THE MALAYSIAN MIGRATION FUND BOARD AND WILL STAY IN SABAH FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS. THEY WILL BE PROVIDED WITH FREE HOUSING AND MEDICAL CARE. IF THEY DECIDE TO SETTLE PERMANENTLY, EACH FAMILY WILL BE GRANTED 15 ACRES OF LAND BY THE SABAH GOVERNMENT UNDER APPROVED LAND SETTLEMENT SCHEMES.

    FORTY-SIX OF THE 'PIONEERS' ARE RUBBER TAPPERS AND THE REMAINDER ARE OIL PALM WORKERS.

    THEY WERE WARMLY WELCOMED BY MR. JAMES VOON, THE VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE MALAYSIAN MIGRATION FUND BOARD.

    THE SECOND BATCH OF ABOUT 100 WORKERS, WILL LEAVE ON FEBRUARY 19. THEREAFTER, ABOUT THE SAME WILL BE SENT BY THE BOARD EVERY MONTH UNTIL SABAH GETS AN ADEQUATE SUPPLY OF MUCH NEEDED LABOUR.
