    GALES, WITH WINDS OF RECORD STRENGTH, RIPPED ACROSS BRITAIN KILLING ELEVEN PEOPLE AND LEAVING A TRAIL OF WRECKAGE FROM ONE END OF THE ISLAND TO THE OTHER, FEB 16.

    THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY 100 M.P.H. WINDS BLOCKED DOZENS OF ROADS WITH UPROOTED TREES, HALTED SHIPPING AND DISRUPTED AIR TRAFFIC. SEVEN OF THE VICTIMS WERE CRUSHED IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS BY COLLAPSING ROOFS AND FALLING CHIMNEYS.

    SHEFFIELD WAS THE WORST HIT AREA WITH THREE PEOPLE DEAD AND MORE THAN HALF OF ALL PROPERTY IN THE CITY DAMAGED. THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE WERE LEFT HOMELESS AS THE WINDS BATTERED 70,000 HOUSES, DESTROYING 100 OF THEM COMPLETELY. A STATE OF EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED, LEAVE FOR POLICE AND FIREMEN WAS CANCELLED AND 16,000 WORKMEN WERE SWITCHED TO EMERGENCY SALVAGE OPERATIONS. SCHOOLS WERE TURNED INTO EMERGENCY RELIEF CENTRES AND THE CITY'S THREE HOSPITALS WHERE JAMMED WITH CASUALTIES IN SCENES REMINISCENT OF THE BLITZ. AT ONE FARMHOUSE THE ROOF CAVED IN ON A YOUNG COUPLE ASLEEP IN BED. THE WIFE WAS KILLED INSTANTLY AND HER HUSBAND SERIOUSLY INJURED, BUT THEIR YOUNG BABY ESCAPED.

    IN NORTH-EAST ENGLAND ALONG THE TYNE AND TEES RIVERS THERE WERE NO DEATHS BUT DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE. SHIPPING AT TYNESIDE WAS HALTED WHEN 90 M.P.H. GUSTS BROUGHT DOWN TWO NEWLY ERECTED 400 FOOT HIGH ELECTRIC PYLONS, DRAGGING OVERHEAD HIGH VOLTAGE CABLES INTO THE RIVER.

    A WIND GUST AT THE SHETLAND ISLANDS OFF THE NORTH OF SCOTLAND WAS RECORDED AT 177 M.P.H. -- A RECORD FOR THE BRITISH ISLES.
