  • Description

The Vice-President of Botswana, Doctor Guett Masire, arrived in Caire on Sunday 25th January, the first stop in his tour of Arab capitals to negotiate a new oil agreement for his country.

Along with Swaziland and Lesotho, Botswana has been hard hit by the Arab oil embargo imposed by the Arab countries on South Africa and increased oil prices. In the past all three countries have received the bulk of their supplies from the white-ruled Republic.

Officials from Botswana recently attended a special meeting of the Organisation of African Unity to discuss the effects of the Arab oil situation on the developing African states.

The Arab nations have already expressed willingness to help developing states adversely affected by increased oil prices.

Arab emissaries have already visited Botswana to assure the government that oil supplies would be continued and to thank the country for breaking off diplomatic relations with Israel late last year.
