    Background: LOS ANGLES, UNITED STATES

In the semi-finals of the Olympic soccer competition, Brazil, in yellow, qualified for a place in the final against France after beating Italy 2-1 in extra time on August 9. After a goalless first half, Brazil went ahead when Augilmar Oliveira shot past Italian keeper Franco Tancredi. Italy equalised eight minutes later in the 63rd minute when Pietro Fanna hammered a shot into the corner of the net. But in the sixth minute of extra time, Brazil clinched the match when Ronaldo Silva picked up a deflected shot and scored.

In the synchronised swimming, United States duo Tracie Ruiz and Candy Costie won the gold medal in the first ever such Olympic event. Their duet performance scored 98.20. Ruiz and Costie led through all three rounds of the event for a total of 195.584. Japan won the silver and Canada the bronze.

World record holder Anisoara Stanciu of Romania won the women's long jump gold medal with a leap of 6.92 metres. Romania also took second place with a 6.92 metres. Romania also took second place with a 6.81 metre leap by Vali Ionescu.

In the women's 200 metres, Valerie Brisco-Hooks of the United States won her second gold medal of the Olympics, finishing in a time of 21.31 seconds to break the Olympic record of 22.03, set in 1980 by East Germany's Barbell Wockel. Brisco-Hooks had earlier won the women's 400 metres event, the first time any athlete, male or female, had won the two races at one Olympiad.

In the men's decathlon, Britain's Daley Thompson became the second man in Olympic history to win the gold medal in successive Olympics, and came within one point of the world record. His arch rival, Jurgen Hingsen of West Germany won the solver medal. Thompson's total for the two-day event was just a single point short of the world mark of 8,798, set by Hingsen in June this year. Up to the final event, the 1,500 metres, Thompson had a good chance of breaking the world record. He needed a time of four minutes 34.8 seconds but finished just outside it, in four minutes 35 seconds.
