    Background: ATHENS, GREECE

The European Athletics Championships, traditionally dominated by the Soviet Union, have this year become a disaster for the USSR team. In four days of competition they have won only three gold medals in 23 events, leaving them trailing behind leaders, East Germany, with nine and West Germany with four. The Soviet decline was emphasised on September 9 when the East Germans took the gold in all four sprint events. Olaf Prenzler held off a late sprint by Britain's Cameron Sharp to win the men's 200 metres in 20.46 seconds. In the women's 200 metres East Germany again beat the British team with Baerbel Woekel taking the title from Catherine Smallwood in 22.04 seconds. The Soviets have yet to win a single gold in the men's track events and the 400 metres final was no exception. Soviet Olympic Champion Viktor Markin was left with only a bronze medal with Hartmut Weber of West Germany taking the gold in 44.72 seconds and East German Andreas Knebel winning the silver.
