  • Description

Frederico Bahamontes, 31 year old "first ever" Spaniard to win the World's longest road cycle race- the tour de France- swept into the Pare des Princes, Paris, July 19 after 24 days and 2,706 miles of rugged mountains and sizzling plains. Sixty five tired competitors completed the 206 mils last leg from Dijon to Paris.

Bahamontes time was 123 hours 46 minutes and 45 seconds. Henri Anglades of France, the runner-up, finished in 123 hours 58 minutes and 26 seconds.

Forty thousand spectators gave a standing ovation to Bahamontes as he wheeled across the finishing line. Enthusiastic fans covered the track with flowers despite their obvious disappointment that one of the French idols did not provide the expected victory.

The winner has stated he will not keep any of the GBP35,000 prize money. He will share it among team mates who supported him throughout the race. "I'll be content with the money I shall make from the contracts I have signed to race after the Tour" he said.

Belgium won the team standings and a prize of three million francs.

Britain's Brian Robinson did extremely well to finish nineteenth in the individual placings.
