Background: Parliamentarians from African, Caribbean and Pacific states associated with the Lome Convention, opened trade talks with the European Economic Community (common Market) in Luxembourg on Tuesday (1 June).

The Convention, establishing overall co-operation between the European Common Market and 46 African, Caribbean and Pacific states, was signed in Lome, the capital of Togo, in February 1975.

Tuesday's meeting marked the first joint session of members of parliament from the nine common market nations and the developing nations associated with the Lome Convention.

Monsieur Phillippe Yace, the chairman of the Ivory Coast National Assembly, and Monsieur Georges Spenale, the President of the European Parliament, were elected joint presidents of the assembly, which was opened by the Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg.

During the three day meeting -- scheduled to end on Thursday (3 June) -- discussion was planned on a wide variety of issues. The programme was expected to cover topical problems including sugar and beef exports from developing nations, the results of the United Nations Trade and Development Conference in nairobi, and the continuing dialogue between the rich and poor nations.
